Three kinds of organization

Who Mission-Minded Bookkeeping works with.

Churches and non-profits are the heart of the practice, and small businesses are served on their own tiers rather than borrowed ones. The accounting underneath differs more than you would expect.

01 / Who we serve

Pick the one that sounds like you.

Each has its own page covering what changes, what is included and the questions that come up most.

02 / The difference

Why the distinction matters.

The obvious difference is vocabulary. The real one is obligation. A business's revenue belongs to the business. A church's restricted gift belongs to the purpose the giver attached to it, and a non-profit's grant belongs to the program the funder named. Money with strings attached has to be tracked separately or you cannot prove you honoured them.

That is why unlimited restricted, designated and grant fund tracking sits in every non-profit tier including the entry one, and why the small business tiers carry job tracking and invoice creation instead. Selling one as the other produces a service that fits neither.

  • Churches need designations preserved and reported, from a plant with no bank account to a multi-site organization.
  • Non-profits need grant and restricted fund tracking that still holds up when the funder sends their own reporting template.
  • Small businesses need invoicing, job tracking and financials a tax preparer can file from.

There is one more distinction worth naming, because it decides whether an engagement works at all. Our ideal client knows they need help and wants a partner to work with them rather than a vendor to work for them. In practice that means someone on your side stays curious about the numbers: a treasurer who wants to understand the fund report, a director who wants to know why cash flow and surplus disagree, an owner who watches the monthly recap.

That is also why the teaching is not an add-on. Good stewardship is the actual goal and clean books are how you get there, so the reporting is built to be understood by the people who have to act on it rather than to look thorough in a binder.
